Whether you’re already knowledgeable on the Battle of Britain, or exploring it as a novice, don’t miss the new reference book from Busybird Publishing. It’s entitled The Battle of Britain – Aircrew from Australia, their Aircraft and a Modeller’s Guide. And to quote a well-known TV advert from years back, “it does exactly what it says on the tin”. Running to 260 pages, this hefty softback provides biographies of 35 pilots born in Australia, or abroad to one or more Australian parents, and who flew in the Battle of Britain.
Many may be familiar to those who know the subject well. However, modellers less well-acquainted with the personnel involved may recognise some of the names, but could be forgiven for not knowing they were Australian. Richard Hillary and Desmond Fopp are prime examples. They shared a common trait in that they both suffered serious burns in combat but recovered enough to fly again. Sadly, Hillary did not survive the war, but Fopp was luckier and enjoyed a long and successful career in the RAF, then air traffic control.
