Hornby Magazine’s 24hr Challenge:

Every project layout we build is defined by a timescale, not least because they are built to meet our publication dates for the magazine. The 24hr challenges give us a closer limit to work with which, hopefully, controls some of ideas and allows us to create layouts that anyone could build at home.

For this third 24hr challenge project we set ourselves the target of building a micro layout to go with this issues theme. Micro layouts are nothing new, but for the Hornby Magazine team this type of layout is a little out of the ordinary as more recently the magazine’s project layouts have been allowed to out grow traditional home spaces in pursuit of creating signature models for our exhibition appearances.

The micro layout is very much in vogue now and they are a popular choice for both home and exhibition purposes. They come in all shapes sizes, styles and complexities – some don’t even have any points! We had viewed lots of different ‘micros’ in the run up to this project and they assisted us in setting out the basic criteria of the design. It had to fit in …
