The Brush Type 4 is one of the longest standing main line diesel locomotives. The first of the fleet of 512 locomotives was introduced in 1962 and even today examples are still in daily use with operators including West Coast Railways and Locomotive Services Limited.

Heljan produced its first model of the Brush Type 4 in the early 2000s, but since then the world of model railways has moved on greatly leading the manufacturer to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch. The new Class 47, due to arrive with retailers in early 2024, owes nothing to its predecessor and delivers an entirely new product.
