Making the most of ‘NG7’ Part 1

In the first part of this feature, DAN EVASON lays the foundations for a new layout intended for Bachmann’s new ‘NG7’ range.The setting is a classic slate quarry in Wales - see it at the 2024 Great Electric Train Show on October 12/13.

Building model railway layouts is always a balance of space, time and cost – and of course choosing what scale to model too, a dilemma I have been facing recently.

‘N’ gauge would fit nicely on a small board, but I want to be able to add and see detail as you can with ‘O’ gauge, but I don’t have enough space for the latter. I could build something in ‘OO’,gauge but that would also be restrictive on space and tricky to get a prototypical look. The ideal combination would be something like ‘O’ gauge detail in the space of a smaller scale.

Bachmann’s announcement of its new range of ‘NG7’ narrow gauge locomotives and rolling stock – 7mm scale models running on 16.5mm gauge track – coincided with a trip with a friend to Dinorwic slate quarry too. Had the stars aligned?
