NEW-TOOL 1/144 TYPE IXC/40 U-BOAT FROM REVELL

Revell’s 1/144 German U-boats are arguably some of the company’s best products in the maritime realm. Various Type VII sub-types have been issued, while the Type XXI was released with and without interior detail. U-boat fans may be pleased to know, though, that Revell has now provided a new-tool 1/144 Type IXC/40.

Item 05167 replicates the vessel upgrade that involved the hull of the Type IXC being lengthened slightly and ‘pinched’ at its upper front. This ‘quick-diving deck’ expedited the diving time by reducing the amount of trapped air in the front hull. The /40 gained extra range and surfaced speed through this reworking. Revell has chosen to depict the U-190 in 1945, when commanded by Oblt Hans-Erwin Reith. This U-boat surrendered to the Allies on May 14 that year, at Bay Bulls, Newfoundland. It was then employed for testing work by the Canadian navy before being bombed by aircraft and attacked with guns by the Canadian vessels HMCS Nootka and HMCS New Liskeard, in 1947; it sank as a result.
