Bright hues and stunning tonal work ensures this month’s reader feature contains an eye-catching assortment of models – including online-only exclusives.
Revell Panavia Tornado GR.1 ‘If Only’
Built for an IPMS West Suffolk competition, Martin Laurence’s striking Revell Tornado GR.1 depicts the type as an ‘if only’ airframe – a development of the ‘what if’ mantra – in the service of Ukraine’s air arm. Construction was out of the box, but digital camouflage had to be masked by hand and decals taken from a Trumpeter Su-24 kit.
Tamiya/Paragon Design Supermarine Spitfire prototype
Combining Tamiya’s 1/48 kit with Paragon Design’s conversion set allowed Ken Stanton to depict K5054 – the prototype Spitfire – following the machine being painted light grey-blue at Rolls-Royce. A new cockpit door was scratch-built while paint was from Humbrol and markings sourced from the Xtradecal range.
Airfix Austin K2/Y Ambulance
Paul Chambers is one of many modellers who have enjoyed Airfix’s first all-new 1/35 military kit – depicting the Austin K2/Y ambulance. Built straight from the box, the neat Caunter livery was achieved with AK Interactive paints, with Humbrol shades preferred for the interior and weathering added with Flory Models and AMMO-MIG products.
Revell Harbour Tug Boat
This superb maritime scene was East London-based modeller Peter Hall’s take on the Revell 1/108 Harbour Tug Boat kit, which was first released in 1955. Having said that he enjoys the challenge of constructing such vintage kits, Peter hand-painted the model with Humbrol enamels and scratch-built the entirety of the base. View more below.
ICM MiG-29
Fulcrum-C
Chris Wright constructed ICM’s special ‘Ghost of Kyiv’ edition of its 1/72 MiG-29, replicating the infamous Ukrainian Air Force machines with the distinctive nose artwork. All of the digital camouflage is supplied in decal form, requiring Vallejo acrylic varnish as a precursor, and no weathering was added to preserve the finish.
Italeri Churchill Tank
Now in its 45th year, Italeri’s 1/72 Churchill is certainly in the vintage category, yet can still be built into an eye-catching model as proven by Lim Ewe Gen. Modifications included cutting the front track guards to reveal the rubber-band lengths, blending the two-piece barrel and adding heavily worn winter camouflage.
S Models Sheridan Tank
Another of Lim Ewe Gen’s small-scale projects was the S Models 1/72 M551 Sheridan tank, finished in Vietnam War livery. Photo-etched metal brush guards were kit-supplied but the .50 cal gun shield, stowage, aerial and handle were scratch-built additions.
Vespid Models Leopard 2A7 Plus
Vespid Models’ 1/72 Leopard 2 is a multi-media offering comprising resin, turned metal and photo-etched components – these were constructed here by Lim Ewe Gen. Urban camouflage was a masking challenge for this modeller!
