The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a dive-bomber and scout aircraft developed for the US Navy, SBD standing for Scout Bomber Douglas. It was nicknamed ‘Slow But Deadly’ by crews and was occasionally referred to as ‘Furious D’. The type became famous as the aircraft that delivered fatal blows to Japanese aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
